Quality of Recordings?

I'm working on a study that involves obtaining recordings of crews in the cab of ambulances. I'm using a relatively cheap (Olympus) digital voice recorder that picks up everything...including engine noise, bumps in the road, and most of all the radio. Because I want the crews to get used to the recorder to minimize "acting" for it, I don't want to ask anyone to leave the radio off. Does anyone have any tricks to minimize outside noise? I appreciate any advice!

Hey Cynthia, I posted your question on Twitter to get feedback from others, and they all basically said that once the siren starts going, it's hard to hear anything!
